The History of Fish & Chips in the UK
Fish & Chips originally came to Great Britain in the 17th Century via Jewish people who were fleeing persecution from Portugal & Spain. The early Jewish entrepreneurs originally set up on street corners, cooking their potato wedges and fried fish on (portable) wood fired stoves. They became such a big hit with the British people that they were soon recognised as the national dish.
Fish & Chips championed the British food industry for 270 years until globalisation in the 60's & 70's introduced a whole host of alternative foods on the British high street. But it remains a firm favourite!
